We are delighted to announce that you can now book tickets for our March Monthly meeting!
In celebration of International Women’s Day 8th March, this month we will be focusing on the topic of women in manufacturing and engineering. The event will be hosted and sponsored by our preferred supplier, South Tyneside College and will highlight the great roles that are available in the engineering and manufacturing sector and encourage future workforce diversity.
According to statistics published by the Women’s Engineering Society, women working in engineering in the UK makes up only 11% of the workforce, although the number of registered female engineers (CEng, IEng, EngTech) is only around 6%. This means our members and the wider sector are missing out on the skills and talents of almost 40% of the population. A key question that therefore needs to be considered is, how do we attract more women into the sector?
South Tyneside College will be providing a presentation on how we can engage with women to help develop the manufacturing workforce and will be inviting students from the engineering department to listen to, and hopefully be inspired by our guest speaker, Gillian Armstrong to become the next generation of engineers and business leaders.
Guest speaker:
Gillian Armstrong, Supply Chain Lean Deployment Performance Manager at Caterpillar Inc
From her beginnings as the first female paint spraying apprentice engineer in the country through to her current role in supply chain management. Gillian is a highly motivated professional with over 20 years’ practical experience within manufacturing.
Her key skills include lean deployment, quality management, transport, continuous improvement, and supply chain management. Also, a practitioner in Lean 6Sigma, inventory analysis, extended value stream mapping and supplier development.
After the presentations, delegates will have the opportunity to attend a tour and demonstration of South Tyneside College’s fantastic marine simulator. If you’ve never been on one of these before, you are in for a real experience. The simulator can replicate any of the major ports in the world and all-weather conditions.
