Statement from Richard Swart DL, Chairman of the Advanced Manufacturing Forum
We are delighted to announce the appointment of the Advanced Manufacturing Forum’s first six Ambassador, leaders who are deeply committed to amplifying the importance of manufacturing and engineering across our region and the UK. Each brings a wealth of experience and insight, and will play a vital role in championing our sector, supporting our mission to foster innovation, collaboration, and growth within the advanced manufacturing community.

The Hon. James Ramsbotham CBE DL
James became Chair of Newcastle Building Society in 2021, following 15 years of exceptional service as Chief Executive of the North East Chamber of Commerce, a role in which he left a legacy that continues to shape the region’s business landscape, not least manufacturing and engineering. He also serves as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Sunderland and holds the honorary position of Colonel for The Rifles, reflecting his dedication to both civic and regional development. James brings a wealth of experience, insight, and passion for the North East, and we are honoured to have him join us in championing the future of advanced manufacturing.
Dr Adrian Small
Associate Professor in Operations Management at Northumbria University, a much valued formal partner of the AMF – Dr Small has a strong track record of bridging academic insight and industrial impact. He has worked closely with regional manufacturers to enhance productivity, resilience, and innovation. His expertise and collaborative approach will continue to be a tremendous asset to our community as we continue to drive forward the region’s advanced manufacturing capabilities.
Professor Joanna Berry
Associate Dean: Engagement and Professor in Entrepreneurship at Durham University’s Faculty of Business, Joanna also serves as Director (Business Engagement) for the University’s global Energy Institute. She is a passionate advocate for the Women in STEM agenda, supporting initiatives that promote diversity, inclusion, and opportunity across the sector. Her leadership and insight will be a powerful addition to our Ambassador team.
David Osborne DL
CEO of Roman Showers, one of the region’s leading and long-established manufacturers, based in Newton Aycliffe. Since its founding as a start-up in 1985, Roman has grown to supply products to 75 countries worldwide, including top hotel groups, and now operates subsidiaries in Ireland and Malaysia, serving the Asia Pacific region. In 2009, David established a specialist aluminium extrusion and anodising business in Malaysia, which now delivers capability-driven products globally. David has served as President of the Bathroom Manufacturers Association and was a board member of Made in Britain. Under his leadership, Roman is a proud member of the United Nations Global Compact. David is a frequent speaker on manufacturing and sustainability, and his experience and vision will be invaluable to the Forum and its members.
Professor David Hughes
Associate Dean for Research and Innovation at Teesside University, David leads the University’s cross-institutional Net Zero research theme and is a recognised expert in the circular economy, with a strong focus on industrial digitalisation. He has worked extensively with industry partners to develop innovative technologies that valorise by-products and waste streams, driving sustainability and efficiency across the manufacturing sector. His expertise and leadership will help shape the Forum’s future-facing agenda.
Jamie Ollivere
Chief Executive Officer of the Regional Technology Centre (RTC North), one of the region’s leading business support organisations. Under Jamie’s leadership, RTC North has played a pivotal role in helping companies to innovate, compete, and grow, supporting the advancement of manufacturing and technology across the North East. Jamie’s experience in fostering business growth and innovation will be a tremendous asset to our Forum and its members.
