AMF & Northumbria University – Governance and Leadership – special guest speakers; Sharon Constancon, and Scott Constable

Newcastle Business School (Northumbria University) / Advanced Manufacturing Forum (AMF) will jointly host this event with two superb speakers, Sharon Constancon, focusing on Corporate Governance and Scott Constable, an ex-Royal Marine Commandos Sergeant, focusing on applying lessons on the battlefield to management skills in the workplace.

London-based Sharon holds a MBA, is a Chartered Director, Chartered Secretary (Chartered Governance Professional) and a Chartered Member of CISI with over 40 years working in corporates, banking, not-for profit and her own businesses.

She listed her first business on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in the late 1990’s and recently retired after nine years of being the Executive Chairman of the South African Chamber of Commerce, and is now Chair of the SA Chamber’s Advisory Board.

She is CEO of the Genius Group which delivers governance magic and CEO of Valufin where she is the forex treasurer for many global companies, including others in the North East.

Sharon will share her experiences in delivering board evaluations, addressing Board conflicts and will give you some handy tips to mitigate bias, influence and agenda which could preclude optimum decision-making.

She will focus on the importance of a risk mindset, quality leadership. a forward thinking focus and how a Board can add value to management. This session is valuable to all executives and Board Directors.

Her presentation will be valuable to any size team or Board. as it is about people and helping individuals to deliver their best.

In addition, she will discuss board evaluations, effectiveness reviews and board member appraisals plus board development and training

Now a North East businessman, Scott, who has over a decade of experience leading teams on global operations including frontline conflict zonesin his own words will discuss:

“…what I’ve learned over 14 years as a Royal Marines Commando Sergeant, serving alongside some of the most remarkable leaders I’ve had the honour to work with. Drawing on personal experiences and the unique culture of the Royal Marines, this session offers actionable insights for anyone seeking to enhance leadership, resilience, and organisational success.

Leadership is about more than giving orders – it’s about empowering others while taking full accountability for outcomes. Great leaders understand the importance of building strong networks and remain open to unexpected relationships that can unlock new opportunities for success. Equally, fostering resilience is not just about individual grit; it’s about creating a culture where people are motivated to push themselves to their limits and excel as a team.

A key theme of the presentation is the critical role of identifying and training future leaders. Long-term success depends on nurturing talent and ensuring the next generation is equipped to step into leadership roles with confidence. Another focus is communication – true listening, not just hearing. When every team member knows their voice matters and that communication flows in all directions, it strengthens trust, clarity, and connection.

By weaving together stories from the Royal Marines with practical insights, this session challenges conventional thinking and inspires action. It’s an opportunity to reflect on what it takes to lead with purpose, adapt to challenges, and build a foundation for success that lasts – whether in the boardroom, on the factory floor, or beyond.”

There will be time for Q&A.
