AMF Monthly Meeting – National Glass Centre and Port of Sunderland Tour
Latest developments at the Port of Sunderland, plus a look into the history of glass making in the North East
Our April monthly meeting takes us to the National Glass Centre, and Port of Sunderland. We will hear from the port’s management team on the latest developments that have been announced at the port and the exciting opportunities this brings. We will be taken via bus from the National Glass Centre on the north side of the river to the port on the south side and then driven around and given a magical (not so) mystery tour with commentary!
We are hopeful that we will also have the opportunity to see glass blowing at the National Glass Centre too (this will depend on what is planned for the day at the centre). Sunderland has a rich heritage of glass-making that dates back to 674 AD. Benedict Biscop, founder of Wearmouth-Jarrow Priory, brought skilled craftsmen from Gaul to create the first stained glass window in England for St Peter’s Church, Monkwearmouth.
