AMF Meeting at Hitachi Rail
Join us as we visit Hitachi Rail in Newton Aycliffe for our first site visit of 2025.
Hitachi celebrated the return of rail manufacturing to its British home in the North-East, joining with key delivery partners at the official opening of an £82m Rail Vehicle Manufacturing Facility in 2015.
The facility was built after Hitachi won a government contract to assemble new InterCity Express (IEP) trains for the East Coast Main Line.
Since then, car body welding and painting capabilities have been added, meaning over £100 million has been invested in the site.
In 2024, the 300th UK-built train entered passenger service, and with the recent Government announcement; FirstGroup, Hitachi and Angel Trains have struck a deal to build 14 state-of-the-art trains to be used on rail lines across the UK, as part of a £500 million deal.
