HVR International Employee Takes On World’s Toughest Row Across the Atlantic
The Advanced Manufacturing Forum (AMF) is proud to support long-standing member HVR International as employee Karl Bainbridge prepares to take on one of the world’s most demanding endurance challenges — the World’s Toughest Row 2026.
Karl, from South Shields, will be part of Team Remiges V, a five-man crew from the North East of England and Scotland attempting a 3,000-mile unsupported row across the Atlantic Ocean from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua.
Widely recognised as one of the toughest endurance events on Earth, the challenge will see the team rowing continuously in shifts for up to 70 days, battling sleep deprivation, harsh ocean conditions and the physical and mental demands of life at sea.
Fewer than 1,700 people worldwide have successfully completed the crossing.
Alongside the personal challenge, the team is also aiming to raise awareness and funds for three important charities:
- MND Scotland
- Mind Body & Sole
- Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity
Karl, an engineer at HVR International and experienced endurance athlete, sees the challenge as an opportunity to represent the North East on a global stage while inspiring others to push beyond perceived limits.
Speaking about the challenge, Karl said:
“This challenge isn’t just about rowing an ocean; it’s about putting the North East on the map, showcasing our resilience, and inspiring others to aim beyond what seems possible.”
The team is currently seeking sponsors and supporters as preparations continue towards the December 2026 start date.
Sponsorship opportunities range from local business support packages through to headline partnership opportunities, with supporters helping fund the challenge while also contributing towards the team’s charitable fundraising goals.
AMF General Manager Arthur Hodgson said:
“Karl’s challenge is an incredible example of the determination, resilience and mindset we see so often across the manufacturing and engineering community. We’re proud to see one of our long-standing member companies represented in such an extraordinary challenge and wish Karl and the entire Team Remiges V every success as preparations continue.”
